The human body is a fascinating thing, our cells speak to each other, but in order to do we need to produce hormones. And how do we produce hormones? Through our network of glands. It is this whole process which we call the Endocrine System and it's pretty much the root of everything that our bodies do throughout life. From moods to puberty. Getting pregnant to weight gain. Weakened bones to lack of energy. Growth and development to metabolism.
Glands are all over our bodies starting in the brain and down to our reproductive systems and they each play their own roles putting out hormones that go on to do specific jobs.
So why do we need to be aware of it?
Endocrine disrupter chemicals are substances in the air we breathe, the soil our food comes from, and water we drink. And it doesn't just stop there as we know now EDCs are also found in our personal hygiene products, furniture, cosmetics, and even our children's toys. The danger of EDCs, and any other chemicals which are toxic to our bodies is that they're linked to cancer, asthma, and skin irritation to say the least. So noting that our families have increased symptoms of asthma or eczema, look to where we reside and see where we can make some swaps or at the very least - be a conscious consumer.
A fairly big obstacle is the ingredients list on products such as shampoos and moisturisers, in that there are too many words which simply mean nothing unless you're scientifically minded or have done your prior research. But it's not just the names we don't know, it's also whether there is long term data on how they interact with our endocrine system or not.
So we have to be prepared.
We have to be open minded.
And we have to want to make changes to even begin this low-tox living journey to reducing our toxic load!
I have been on this mission for 4 years now, and there is still so much to learn but I want to share my learns with you, create a space where we can educate each other alike, ensuring that it is passed onto our children and theirs, removing the misconception of 'it's on the shelf it must be fine' and replacing it with the invaluable education of knowing what you're putting on your skin and where it comes from.
Fire retardants in our mattresses and sofas. Preserving the dining table that we eat off. The carpets, new or old are laced with latex and formaldehyde (which is also in all of the modern MDF furniture). Shower curtains and beanbags with phthalates. The list is endless.
Washing detergent, washing up liquid, dishwasher detergent, rinse aid, surface cleaner, furniture polish, shower cleaner, toilet cleaner, bleach, carpet and floor cleaners, air fresheners... Do we really need that many cleaners?
This word can literally have hundreds of ingredients behind it that don't have to be declared on packaging. These are some of the worst that we can expose ourselves to. Anything fragrance, anything scented. Be careful, they lurk everywhere, and it's a great one for 'greenwashing'!
Shower and bath products - we're lead to believe that 'bubbles mean clean' they do not. There are too many chemicals added to make bubble bath foam, smell nice, and be preserved. Shampoo commonly has SLS's. Deodorant is full of fragrance and heavy metals to stop us from sweating, but that's one of the most natural things!
Ever pondered that majority (if not all) meds have potential side effects? And we have to treat the side effect with a different med.
Allopathic medicine has its place, but not in every day life. Why 'kill' the pain, why not understand where the pain is coming from and why? Our doctors should support finding the root cause.
Tap water is the most accessible and toxic products you can get. Depending upon where you are does make a massive difference, but whilst PFAs ("forever chemicals") in England and Wales don't exceed the current safety limit, that doesn't mean they're not included.
Filter, Filter, Filter.
A child's skin is the best skin we can get. We do not need to be putting all of the chemical laden products on them at such a young age - the impact in their growth and development (mentally, physically, emotionally) is too much. J&J paid $4.7bn for their talc causing cancer, what other products should we be skeptical about?
Let's try to strive for organic. The opposite to organic comes with a high risk of being sprayed with Glyphosate which the WHO classified in 2015 as “probably carcinogenic to humans" and in 2019 a study concluded that exposure increased the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 41%. Where organic isn't feasible, we should at least try to shop local
Drinks bottles, food wrappers, Tupperware, silicone kitchen tools,
If you DIY any of your own products and use essential oils, be sure to use glass or the plastic container can erode away and become a part of the product!
